Heterotrophic Nitrification and AerobicDenitrification of a Wastewater from a ChemicalCompany by Alcaligenes faecalis No.4

چکیده
A wastewater from a chemical company (abbreviated as WC) containing approximately 5000 mg NH4-N/L ammonium and a slight amount of BOD was treated with Alcaligenes faecalis No.4 (No.4),which is capable of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification. The repeatedbatch operation was conducted at 30°C for 900 h at controlled dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) of 2-3 mg/L in the presence of citrate as the carbon source and inorganic nutrients. The removal efficiency of ammonium reached 90-100% within 24-30 h, and the average ammonium removal rate was 1.1 kg NH4-N/m 3/day, which is more than 100 fold greater than that achieved with conventional nitrification-denitrification processes. The operation was shut-down for 220 h, and after that the ammonium removal activity achieved by No.4 resumed without delay, and a high removal rate was maintained. The addition of 3% NaCl to the wastewater resulted in almost the same ammonium removal rate as that without NaCl.

Removal of High-Strength of Ammonium and Phenol from Coking Wastewater by Alcaligenes Faecalis No.4
Alcaligenes faecalis No.4, which is capable of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification was used to treat coking wastewater (CW) to remove high-strength of ammonium and phenol. First, the phenol-degrading ability of No.4 was verified and a synthetic medium containing lactate and phenol as carbon sources was subsequently applied to the No.4 culture. Both carbon materials were enti...
متن کاملA comparison of NO and N2O production by the autotrophic nitrifier Nitrosomonas europaea and the heterotrophic nitrifier Alcaligenes faecalis.
Soil microorganisms are important sources of the nitrogen trace gases NO and N2O for the atmosphere. Present evidence suggests that autotrophic nitrifiers such as Nitrosomonas europaea are the primary producers of NO and N2O in aerobic soils, whereas denitrifiers such as Pseudomonas spp. or Alcaligenes spp. are responsible for most of the NO and N2O emissions from anaerobic soils. It has been s...
متن کاملSimultaneous Removal of High-Strength Ammoniumand Phosphorus by Alcaligenes faecalis No. 4
Alcaligenes faecalis No. 4 (No. 4), which conducts heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification, removed 800 mg-N/l of highstrength ammonium and 100 mg-P/l of phosphorus, both in a synthetic medium and in an anaerobically digested municipal sludge solution. The estimated N2 conversion ratio from ammonium-nitrogen was approximately 50%. When the initial phosphorus concentration was re...
متن کاملPyruvic oxime dioxygenase from heterotrophic nitrifier Alcaligenes faecalis is a nonheme Fe(II)-dependent enzyme homologous to class II aldolase
Pyruvic oxime dioxygenase (POD), a key enzyme in heterotrophic nitrification, was purified from Alcaligenes faecalis, and the molecular and catalytic characteristics were reexamined. POD was purified as the homotetramer of the subunit whose molecular weight was 30,000. The deduced amino acid sequence of POD was homologous with a class II aldolase that has been regarded as the Zn(II)-dependent e...

A technological system was developed for efficient nitrogen removal from real digester supernatant in a single reactor with shortened aeration to increase the economical aspects of wastewater treatment. The supernatant (600 mg TKN/L, low COD/N ratio of 2.2) was treated in batch reactors with aerobic granules (GSBRs) to test how one, two, or three non-aeration phases and acetate pulse feeding in...
